Product Name: Extremely Rare 1792 shops Former New York Sea Captain's Navigation Book
This is an extremely rare copy of John Hamilton Moore's "The Seaman's Complete Daily Assistant, and New Mariner's Compass: Being an Easy Method of Keeping a Journal at Sea," 4th Edition, printed in London by B. Law and Son. This book was owned by Captain Peter Laing (1761-1821), a New York City mariner born in Aberdeen. He was a member of Marine Society of New York, joining in 1798. He was once the owner of the building that later became the famous bar, The Bridge Cafe, until it closed after Super Storm Sandy. It is bound in smooth brown calfskin leather, with a simple tooled rope design in bands shops on the spine. Some rubbing, scuffing, & wear on the covers. Front cover attached by the sewn thread but split at the hinge. Laing signed the book inside the front cover with the date October 3rd, 1794 & made numerous writing inside the front & back, in pencil & ink. Has tables and illustrations. Measures 5.5" wide x 8.5" high x 7/8" thick. Weight about 13.5 oz. Great gift for a sailor!.
