Product code: Flavia - Worm Wooden Cutout shops 1960s
Whimsical worm wooden cut out by California artist, Flavia Weedn (1929-2015). 8” long and 3/8” thick. Known for whimsical painting, she opened a few shops in So Ca in the 1960s. My mom worked at the one at The Plaza Shops located at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Ca. Original owner since 1960's. Flavia's “husband calls her art ‘polished primitive' but Flavia ….says her paintings have been described in many different ways and she doesn't really know how to classify them….It is a family-type operation. My brother and his wife do the wood cut-out animals and flowers and my mother makes the Flavia dolls. Everything in the shop is handmade and has what she calls ‘the crude professional look.'” The worm has a heavy application of pink paint - perhaps over gesso. The copyright Willie may refer to her brother Bill who did the wood cuts. There is a metal area on back for wall hanging. eBay's trio of her cutouts is $399. Her shops early artwork has become very collectible & rare.
