Vintage Spode China Stafford Flowers Nepeta, Paeonia & Hycinthus Bowl And Lid. Spode, a name synonymous with quality and longevity. Spode is one of the oldest shops ceramics manufacturers in the world. In 1770, an Englishman, named Josiah Spode, developed his first factory in Stoke-on-Trent, in England. He was quickly recognized for his high quality items and developed two very important processes in fine china production. He instituted a process for making bone china, which is still used today. He also further developed the process for transfer printing in underglaze on earthen ware. The Stafford Flowers collection released in 1989, soon became a favorite, due to its botanical designs based on illustrations from 1790. The lovely covered casserole/soup tureen is a classic white background with gold trim to accent the floral designs. It is in very good vintage condition, with few use wear marks.
