The Papago Indians, now called Tohono O'Odham (The People of the Desert), inhabit over 50 villages within their beautiful reservation in southern Arizona. They still gather the materials for their baskets as their ancestors did. It is called a Friendship Basket because of the anthropomorphic Man (Woman?) design. This authentic piece of American Indian art consists of two parts: the warp (or inner coil) is made of beargrass; the weft (or design) is harvested either from the soaptree yucca cactus (green and white), the pod of the devil's claw (brown/black), or the roots of the banana yucca cactus (red). All the colors occur naturally; no dyes are utilized. Size: 11″ Wide x 5″ Tall Opening is 6.75" Condition is very Good, no fraying shops but there is some fading as expected over time for organic materials.
