Mid 20th Century This rare and unique Makassae Ebony wood sculpture was carved in the likeness of the Bali Dewi Sri Rice Goddess. Dewi Sri is the Indonesian Rice Goddess, equivalent of the Indian Goddess Lakshmi. Sri is the Goddess of the earth and the Mother of the Javanese people. In the Javanese harvest ceremonies She is worshiped as the Rice Mother and as the Rice Bride. What a cool sculpture for anyone who loves unique wood sculptures and especially of Indonesian origin. One of the spikes on her head broke in half as shown in the pictures. It's not something the eye picks easily. See the beautiful wood grain in the pics and intricate carving detail.
