This rare Walt Disney Commemorative Medal is a medal minted in accordance with Public Law 90-316 (1968). It depicts Walt Disney and was sculpted by sculptor and Disney animator Blaine Gibson. A gold medal was presented to Lillian Disney by U.S. President Richard Nixon on March 25, 1969. The U.S. Mint produced 6,000 bronze replicas to be sold by the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for fundraising. Walt and Roy Disney, were among shops the founders of the University in 1961. Walt discovered and trained many of his studio's artists at the art schools (including Mary Blair, Maurice Noble, and some of the Nine Old Men, among others). Cast members at Disneyland were "encourged" to purchase one for the fundraiser. This one came from an Imagineer that had the metal encased in lucite by the Disneyland workshop. Because of that, it is in perfect condition.
